Vestments:

What colors?

Father Eugene Schmitt writes about priests’ vestments in a recent bulletin at St. Raphael Parish in Dubois and St. Peter Celestine Parish in Celestine.

“A question some may ask is, ‘What colors are worn as vestments in what times of the year in the Church calendar?’

“Green is worn in the ordinary time in the Church year. Purple is worn during Advent and Lent and represents the penitential sense of those seasons.

“Rose can be worn on the Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday).

“White denotes time of great celebration as seen in the Christmas and Easter Seasons. White is also worn at baptisms, weddings, funerals, ordinations, feast’s days of the Lord, the Blessed Mother feast days, and saints who are not martyrs.

“Red implies the blood of Christ (Good Friday), the Holy Spirit (Pentecost), and the martyrs.

“Black, rarely seen, can be worn for funerals and also on Good Friday.”
