Walk through the Mass

“Several weeks ago I was asked to do a ‘Walk through the Mass’ for the RCIA candidates,” writes Father Tony Ernst, pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Haubstadt, Holy Cross Parish in Fort Branch, and St. Bernard Parish in Snake Run.

“They had learned about the theology of the Mass, but they wanted to know more about why we do all of the things we do at the Mass. Basically, we went through all of the specifics of the Mass.

“Why do we sit, stand and kneel at different times? Why do we sign ourselves with the Cross before the proclamation of the Gospel? Why do we genuflect?

“This was not only helpful to those who are interested in joining the Catholic Church, it was also good for those who have been Catholic all of their lives.

“Someone suggested that we do this for the parishes during Lent. We did this several years ago, but a refresher is always good. So, we will offer a ‘Walk through the Mass’ on three consecutive Tuesdays at St. Bernard Church – March 3, 10 and 17 at 6:30 p.m.”

Monastic formation

In a brief ceremony at the monastery entrance, Jon Blaize and four other novices were recently clothed in the Benedictine habit at St. Meinrad Archabbey. They now begin a year of monastic formation.

The novitiate is a time of prayer and learning intended to help a novice discern his vocation as a monk. At the end of the year, a novice may be permitted to profess temporary vows of obedience, fidelity to the monastic way of life and stability in the community of Saint Meinrad.

Blaize is a parishioner at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Haubstadt.

“Last week, Pedro Mendez, the coordinator for Hispanic Ministry, popped the question and she said ‘Yes!’ The lucky lady? Emily Herr, parish catechetical leader, at St. Joseph Parish in Dale.
