National Vocations Week Set For Nov. 6-12

By

Normally, when I talk about Vocations I include all vocations – i.e. calls to married life, single life, the priesthood and consecrated life. In this feature, however, I would like to tell you about how the Catholic Church in the United States will celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week, which is Nov. 6-12.

This observance is sponsored by the U.S. Bishop’s Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations.  It is a special time for parishes in the U.S. to foster a culture of vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life.

We, the Diocesan Committee for Vocations, have scheduled talks at different schools and parishes across the diocese during this week to explain what it is like to serve the Church as a priest or religious.  We talk about how to discern where God is calling you and the questions to ask yourself. We also encourage each person to pray for his or her vocation.

We will kick off National Vocational Awareness Week on Nov. 5 with the diocese’s annual Massive Chili Fire.  We are gathering for Mass at Holy Cross Parish in Fort Branch at 4 p.m. CT. Local Knights of Columbus will have Chili ready after Mass, and we will close the evening with a bonfire.  Anyone who is 17 years old and older is welcome to join us!

We also encourage you to join us in praying for vocations through the week of Nov. 6-12.  We have arranged Eucharistic Adoration around the diocese, and we welcome the public to join us. The adoration schedule includes:

  • 6: 30 p.m. EDT on Nov. 4 at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand

  • 4 p.m.-5 p.m. CDT on Nov. 7 at the Daughters of Charity Seaton Residence in Evansville

  • 6:30p.m.-7 p.m. CDT on Nov. 9 at the University of Evansville Newman Center

  • 8 p.m.-9:30 p.m. CDT on Nov. 9 in Room 0010 of the Rice Library at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.

  • We also encourage you to join the cloistered Poor Clare Sisters in spirit as they hold adoration from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the Monastery of St. Clare in Evansville.

Throughout the 2016 National Vocation Awareness Week, please encourage individuals  you know to consider serving the Church as a priest, deacon or religious.  Invite them to reach out to a priest, a vocation director or religious community where they might feel called.

Pray for them, support them and reach out to them … and pray for us who serve as vocation directors.

Editor’s Note – Here are some 2017 events that will support our Priest and Religious : Feb. 5 – World Day for Consecrated Life; March 8-14 – National Catholic Sister’s Week; May 5 – World Day of Prayer for Vocations.
