Jubilee Of Mercy Has Been Profound

By John East, Serra Club

The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, as proclaimed by Pope Benedict in his papal bull of indiction “Misericordiae Vultus (“The Face of Mercy”), has been a profoundly reflective period for Catholics.  Over the past year, we have been challenged to embrace our faith and ask forgiveness for those times when we have "trespassed against thee."

As President of the Serra Club of Evansville, it has been my privilege to preside over a group of like-minded servants of Christ through this year of mercy.  Together, as we recite our Serran prayer, we ask of God "not the death of a sinner but rather that he be converted and live."  These are wonderful words that remind us not to judge but to reach out and invite those in need to believe in him and seek his mercy, so they may have everlasting life.

Our mission is vocations. Our programs encourage discernment from the young members of our diocese and recognition, through thanksgiving, of those who have answered the calling to the priesthood and religious life.  Our prayers find fertile soil when we witness the mercy of God as he works through the Holy Spirit to bring new life to the church by providing servants ready and willing to spread the good news that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and stands at the ready to forgive us for ours.

Lifted up by your prayers, with your love and with your help, we will begin anew in 2017 our good work in the hopes that all will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope.
