St. Benedict Cathedral School Names New Principal

Benedictine Father Godfrey Mullen, rector of St. Benedict Cathedral, has announced the appointment of Hank Carley as the new Principal of St. Benedict Cathedral School. Carley replaces Benedictine Sister Karlene Sensmeier, who retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

“At St. Benedict Cathedral, we look forward to the addition of Mr. Carley as principal of our school,” Father Mullen said. “Mr. Carley brings an excellent reputation as an educator and two years as Assistant Principal at Daleville Junior-Senior High School. Above all, Mr. Carley is a man of faith who seeks to continue the great direction of our school, guiding young people to excellent academic levels while also opening their hearts and souls to the person of Jesus Christ.”

“To be offered the opportunity to serve St. Benedict's Cathedral Parish is both exciting and humbling, and I'm grateful for the warm welcome the Evansville diocesan community has given me,” Carley said. “I look forward to working with the Parish community to provide the best possible Catholic education for the children at St. Ben's.”

A native of New Albany, Ind., Carley earned bachelor’s (in 2000) and master’s (in 2006) degrees in Secondary Science Education from Indiana University Southeast. He taught science at Floyd Central and Warren Central High Schools from 2000 to 2015. After earning his Administrator’s License from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2015, Carley became Assistant Principal at Daleville Junior-Senior High School in Daleville, Ind., and served in that capacity before accepting his new position in Evansville.

His wife, Katie (Keown) Carley, is an Evansville native and graduate of St. Benedict Cathedral School, Reitz Memorial High School and Indiana University. She is a kindergarten teacher. The Carleys have three children – Quentin, 4; Vivian, 3; and Elena, 1.

Carley began his duties on July 1.
