Hope And Prayers For U.S.-led Peace Framework In The Middle East

Dear Brothers AND Sisters in Christ:

We are called to be witnesses to hope and ambassadors of peace.  These roles are not meant for a select few or only when taking care of one’s own.  By the very nature of our baptism, each of us is signed, sealed and delivered by divine grace to claim these roles.  

We need to be praying for peaceful resolution to the unrest in Ukraine, as well as other parts of the world.   In particular, Bishop Richard Pates, of Des Moines, Iowa, who serves as Chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace for the United States Conference of Bishops (USCCB), providing a rather concise summary of efforts already underway, is encouraging support in all dioceses for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.  I have always been very impressed with Bishop Pates, especially in this USCCB role.  He is a non-partisan critical thinker, excellent writer and, especially, evidences the pastoral heart of a true shepherd.

Bishop Pates writes; “For decades, our Conference has supported a two-state solution to the conflict, a secure and recognized Israel living in peace with a viable and independent Palestinian state.  We have lifted up the aspirations of two people and affirmed access to the Holy Sites of the three faiths that share the land we call holy.  Now is the time to ask our people to redouble their prayerful efforts to support Israelis and Palestinians seeking peace.”

As many already know, Secretary of State John Kerry has been working toward a peace framework agreement as a basis for resolving the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East.  Pope Francis and the Holy See have expressed support for this initiative.  The USCCB, having frequently urged U.S. leadership for peace, has already commended the U.S. President “for traveling to the Holy Land” and “charging Secretary Kerry with the urgent task of bringing the parties to the negotiating tables.”  Secretary Kerry has asked for the support of Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious leaders.  Thus, I urge everyone to pray for peace and to support the mutual adoption of a framework for peace. 

The consequences of such an agreement are far more reaching than the Middle East.  A successful, sustaining Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement has repercussions for the entire world.  Therefore, we do well to educate ourselves further on the matter, pray together for a fruitful outcome of negotiations, and encourage our public officials and neighbors to support an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.  To this end, in addition to Sample Prayers of the Faithful being provided to our parishes, further resources are available at www.usccb.org/lent. 

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.  Together, let us lift our minds and hearts in prayer for the guidance of divine grace and wisdom for all those involved in deliberations and maintaining all that is necessary to secure the fruitful commitment and outcome of a peace agreement.  In turn, let us all resolve to live in peace with all persons as temples of the Holy Spirit, created in the image of God.  With assurance of my prayers and best wishes, I remain

Esperanza y Oraciones por los Estados Unidos que Guía el Marco de Paz en el Medio Oriente

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo:

Estamos  llamados a ser testigos de la esperanza y embajadores de paz. Estos roles no son para unos pocos seleccionados o solamente para cuidarnos a nosotros mismos. Por la naturaleza de nuestro bautismo, cada uno de nosotros somos marcados, sellados, y enviados por la gracia divina para tomar estos roles.

Tenemos que rezar por una resolución pacífica en cuanto a los disturbios en Ucrania  y en otras partes del mundo. En particular, el Obispo Richard Pates, de Des Moines, Iowa, quien sirve como Presidente del Comité de Justicia y Paz Internacional para la Conferencia de los Obispos de los Estados Unidos (USCCB), está empujando en todas las diócesis el apoyo a un acuerdo de paz entre Israel y Palestina, proporcionando un resumen breve pero consistente sobre los esfuerzos ya en proceso en este tema.

Siempre he estado muy impresionado con el Obispo Pates, especialmente en este rol  en la USCCB. El es un pensador, un escritor excelente y especialmente muestra un corazón pastoral de un pastor verdadero.  El Obispo Pates escribe: “Por décadas, nuestra Conferencia ha apoyado una solución a este conflicto, un Israel seguro y reconocido viviendo en paz con un estado de Palestina viable e independiente. Hemos elevado las aspiraciones de estas gentes y afirmado el acceso a los Sitios Sagrados de las tres creencias que comparten la tierra que nosotros llamamos santa. Ahora es tiempo de pedir a nuestra gente intensificar sus esfuerzos de oración apoyando a los Israelitas y a los Palestinos en busca de la paz.”

Como muchos de ustedes saben, el Secretario del Estado John Kerry ha estado trabajando por un acuerdo de paz como una base para resolver el conflicto de mucho tiempo entre Israel y Palestina en el Medio Oriente. El Papa Francisco y la Santa Sede han expresado apoyo para esta iniciativa. El USCCB, que frecuentemente  ha impulsado el liderazgo de los Estados Unidos para la paz, ha elogiado al Presidente de U. S. “por viajar a la Tierra Santa” y “encomendado al Secretario Kerry con el trabajo urgente de llevar a los dos grupos a la mesa de negociaciones.”  El Secretario Kerry ha pedido el apoyo de los líderes religiosos Judíos, Cristianos, y Musulmanes. Por eso, yo les suplico a todos que recen por la paz y apoyen la adopción mutua de un marco de paz.

Las consecuencias del acuerdo son mucho más amplias que en el Medio Oriente. Un acuerdo de paz sostenible y exitoso entre Israel y Palestina tiene repercusiones en  el mundo entero. Por eso, debemos educarnos más sobre este asunto, rezar juntos por un resultado fructuoso de las negociaciones, y animar a nuestros oficiales públicos y nuestros vecinos para apoyar un acuerdo de paz entre Israel y Palestina.
