Pope Francis And 'The Joy Of The Gospel'

             Pope Francis has certainly captured the imagination of the world, both inside and outside Catholicism.  In addition to being only the third pope in history to be named a Time’s “Person of the Year,” his election as pope was deemed by many to be the top news event of 2013.  All this attention is particularly intriguing when one considers that Pope Francis has yet to make any type of doctrinal or dogmatic changes in the Church.  Rather, all the attention garnered on him is about the tone in which he speaks and the witness in action that backs up this tone.  He speaks of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, simplicity and so many other virtues espoused by the Church.  Yet, it is his actions that are speaking louder than his words.  He speaks of being humble and simple in caring for the poor, the weak, the vulnerable and creation.  Photos of him tenderly embracing the afflicted, affectionately interacting with a small child, sharing a meal with the homeless or reaching out to the sick and elderly seem to crop up in the daily news.  In a world of sound bites, we seem to hang on each day’s new quip from some extraneous homily, interview or comment that the pope offers to us.  He has his critics, of course.  Even Jesus endured criticism and rejection. 

             On the 2013 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, November 24, marking the conclusion of the special Year of Faith, Pope Francis promulgated his first Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (“The Joy of the Gospel”).  While many have found great inspiration in this document, there have been a few who readily sought to weaken the pope’s credibility by accusing him of being a Marxist, a Socialist and even a Heretic.  Thus far, none of these knee-jerk reactions have had the intended effect of disclaiming Pope Francis’ moral authority and intense popularity.  It has been suggested, however, that to grasp the Papacy of Pope Francis, one needs to appreciate the full breadth of his exhortation, “The Joy of the Gospel.”  Personally, I consider it to be an incredible source of Catholic teaching, witness and inspiration.  While it offers much consolation, be assured, it is very challenging.  In fact, if given full consideration of personal reflection, its challenge is rather daunting. 

             What is the ultimate message of this apostolic exhortation?  Just as the title suggests, any and all credible witness or proclamation of the gospel must be carried out in an authentic spirit of joy.  This does not mean that a true disciple must be devoid of sadness, grief, illness, fear, guilt or any other naturally human emotion.  To be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ will necessarily involve hardship, obstacles and even rejection.  To be joyful does not mean that one should live in denial of physical, emotional, mental or spiritual pain.  Suffering is an inevitable part of life for each and every human being.  Authentic Christian discipleship, however, requires that one be able to rise above such suffering in order to give credible witness to the Good News (e.g. the literal translation of the Greek word for “gospel”) of salvation, redemption in Jesus Christ.  What does salvation entail?  The ultimate victory over sin and death has been established through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  True belief in this salvation necessarily involves a particular way of living.  Faith in this Good News must permeate every aspect of one’s being, prompting the believer to be inspired, even driven, to proclaim this divine message to others.  The call to New Evangelization is predicated on each believer’s personal encounter with the person of Jesus Christ, which is cultivated through both individual and communal realities of worship and service.   When such an encounter is authentic, one cannot help but be filled with the joy of divine grace and friendship.  In fact, Pope Francis states, “Consequently, an evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral.”  Ultimately, he points out, proclamation of the gospel must not be considered so much as a burden as it is a privilege.  Despite whatever hardships or obstacles we may face at any given time, we celebrate in the sacraments of the Church, always with an eye toward the cross of Jesus Christ, to remember with spiritual joy that the best is yet to come.  Yet, in faith and hope, we do not simply live in waiting.  Here and now, because of His Kingdom at hand, in the very presence of Emmanuel, God With Us, we already revel in the joy that is born of the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit taking root in our very being.  With Mary, our Blessed Mother, amid the uncertainties and challenges of life, we too must exclaim here and now, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name.”  As we all know, at times, this is “easier said than done.”  In essence, embracing the “Joy of the Gospel” involves conviction in choosing life over death, love over hatred and hope over despair.

Papa Francisco y 'La alegría del Evangelio'

            Papa Francisco sin duda ha capturado la imaginación del mundo, tanto dentro como fuera del catolicismo. Además de ser el tercer Papa en la historia en ser nombrado "Persona del Año " por la revista Times, su elección como Papa fue considerado por muchos como el evento noticioso superior de 2013. Toda esta atención es especialmente interesante cuando se tiene en cuenta que el Papa Francisco todavía no ha hecho ningún tipo de cambios doctrinales o dogmáticos en la Iglesia. Por el contrario, toda la atención que obtuvo es por el tono en que habla y el testigo en la acción que acompana este tono. Él habla de la compasión, la misericordia, el perdón, la sencillez y tantas otras virtudes defendidas por la Iglesia. Sin embargo, son sus acciones que hablan más fuerte que sus palabras. Habla de ser humilde y sencillo en el cuidado de los pobres, los débiles, los vulnerables y la creación. Fotos de como tiernamente abraza a los afligidos, cariñosamente interactua con un niño pequeño , comparte una comida con las personas sin hogar o la manera como se acerca a los enfermos y ancianos aparecen en las noticias todos los días. En un mundo de fragmentos de sonido, parece que nos aferramos a cada nueva ocurrencia de cada día de alguna homilía, entrevista o comentario que el Papa nos ofrece. Él tiene sus críticos, por supuesto. Incluso Jesús soportó críticas y rechazos.

             En la Solemnidad de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo en el 2013, Rey del Universo, 24 de noviembre, marcando el final del especial Año de la Fe, el Papa Francisco promulgó su primera exhortación apostólica Evangelii Gaudium (" La alegría del Evangelio"). Mientras que muchos han encontrado una gran fuente de inspiración en este documento, ha habido unos pocos que fácilmente trataron de debilitar la credibilidad del Papa acusándolo de ser un marxista, socialista e incluso un hereje. Hasta el momento, ninguna de estas reacciones instintivas han tenido el efecto deseado de rechazar la autoridad moral y popularidad intensa de Papa Francisco. Se ha sugerido, sin embargo, que para entender el papado del Papa Francisco, uno tiene que apreciar toda la amplitud de su exhortación, " La alegría del Evangelio." Personalmente, yo la considero como una fuente increíble de la doctrina católica, el testimonio e inspiración. A pesar de que ofrece mucho consuelo, pueden estar seguros, es muy difícil. De hecho, si se les da un examen completo de reflexión personal, su reto es más bien desalentador.

 ¿Cuál es el mensaje final de esta Exhortación Apostólica? Así como el título lo sugiere, todos y cada uno de los testigos creíbles o proclamaciones del evangelio deben llevarse a cabo en un auténtico espíritu de alegría. Esto no quiere decir que un verdadero discípulo debe estar desprovisto de tristeza, dolor, enfermedad, miedo, culpa o cualquier otra emoción natural humana. Para ser un fiel seguidor de Jesucristo se implicarán necesariamente las dificultades, obstáculos e incluso rechazos. Para ser feliz no significa que uno debe vivir en la negación del dolor físico, emocional, mental o espiritual. El sufrimiento es una parte inevitable de la vida de cada ser humano. Un discipulado cristiano auténtico, sin embargo, requiere que uno sea capaz de elevarse por encima de ese sufrimiento con el fin de dar un testimonio creíble de la Buena Noticia (por ejemplo, la traducción literal de la palabra griega para "evangelio") de la salvación, la redención en Jesucristo. ¿En qué consiste la salvación? La victoria final sobre el pecado y la muerte se ha establecido a través de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. La creencia verdadera en esta salvación implica necesariamente una manera particular de vivir. La fe en esta Buena Noticia debe impregnar todos los aspectos de nuestro ser, para que el creyente sea inspirado, incluso provocado, a proclamar este mensaje divino a los demás. La llamada a la Nueva Evangelización se basa en el encuentro personal de cada creyente con la persona de Jesucristo, que se cultiva a través de ambas realidades individuales y comunales de adoración y servicio. Cuando tal encuentro es auténtico, uno no puede dejar de estar lleno de alegría, a gracia y amistad divina. De hecho, el Papa Francisco afirma: "Consecuentemente, un evangelizador no debe parecerse a alguien que acaba de regresar de un funeral." En última instancia, él señala, proclamación del Evangelio no debe considerarse tanto como una carga ya que es un privilegio. A pesar de cualesquiera dificultades u obstáculos que podamos enfrentar en un momento dado, celebremos los sacramentos de la Iglesia, siempre con la mirada puesta en la cruz de Jesucristo,  para recordarnos con alegría espiritual que lo mejor está aún por venir. Sin embargo, en la fe y la esperanza, no sólo vivimos en la espera. Aquí y ahora, a causa de su Reino a la mano, en la misma presencia del Emmanuel, Dios Con Nosotros, ya nos deleitan con la alegría que nace de los dones y frutos del Espíritu Santo que tienen raíces en nuestro propio ser. Con María, nuestra Santísima Madre, en medio de las incertidumbres y los desafíos de la vida, también nosotros debemos exclamar aquí y ahora, "Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Señor, se alegra mi espíritu en Dios mi Salvador... porque el Poderoso ha hecho obras grandes por mí y santo es su Nombre." Como todos sabemos, a veces, esto es "más fácil decirlo que hacerlo." En esencia, abrazar  "La Alegría del Evangelio " implica la convicción en la elección de la vida sobre la muerte, el amor sobre el odio y la esperanza sobre la desesperación.
